Oslo Notes
A village was established in the eighth century at the end of the Oslo Fjord. During the Viking period, she met a remarkable development: agriculture, trade and shipbuilding were important activities. Oslo really deserves being called the "Viking capital." It was founded long after the Viking development during the transition from the Viking era and the arrival of Catholicism in medieval times. According to Saga, Oslo was founded by King Harald Hardråde circa 1050, but recent archaeological discoveries indicate the foundation of the city around 1000. Many of the ancient city ruins exist in "Minneparken" (Ruins Park). The city has a fascinating history, interesting and dramatic. During the plague epidemic of 1938, the population of Oslo was reduced by half (how much we miss something here), this "Black Death" also had political consequences for Norway, reduced to the status of mere province Denmark. Copenhagen during this period was the true capital of the country. The Lutheran Reformation in 1537 had major impact on the city: Religious conflicts, political separation from the Catholic Church and the establishment of a Protestant State Church. Several ruins of churches and monasteries (for example, the Cistercian monastery Hovedøya) bear witness to this process.
Oslo was completely destroyed by fire in 1624. Then the reign of King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway, decided to abandon what today is known as the Old Town (Gamlebyen), and build an entirely new city, pro Oslo was founded by King Harald Hardråde circa 1050 , but recent archaeological discoveries indicate the foundation of the city around 1000. Oslo was completely destroyed by fire in 1624. Then the reign of King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway, decided to abandon what today is known as the Old Town (Gamlebyen), and build an entirely new city, protected by impressive defensive walls of the Akershus Fortress. The King was inspired by strong idealism, and urban planning of a true renaissance city, is a desire for perfection. So, from the ashes of the old town grew up in a new city and almost modern. In 1624 the King gave him his new name: Christianía.En 1814 Norway entered into union with Sweden, and the city of Christiania met throughout the nineteenth century a great political and economic development as well as strong development. This expansion will eventually lead the country to independence in 1905, and the dissolution of the union with Sweden. In 1924, on reaching Christiania 300 years, the municipality decided to return, from the first of January 1925, its original name, Oslo.
